For centuries Nardò was an important Byzantine centre and since 1497, under the Dukes of Acquaviva, the main cultural centre of Salento, University and Academies seat, literary and philosophical studies seat: it was called the Nuoua Atene litterarum.
With nearly 32,000 inhabitants and 190 sqkm land, Nard is the second city of the province by population and land mass and one of the most populous and culturally active centres of Salento. The old town of Nardo boasts an extraordinary palaces, churches, chapels and original architectural details that make it one of the cities of Lecce Baroque, on a par with Lecce and Gallipoli.
